Why be a Good Landlord?
As a landlord, as well as coach, trainer and mediator for landlords for over 25 years, I’ve learned that dealing with tenants and others with whom you do business is often the toughest part of managing real estate.
Imagine your tenant John is suddenly withholding the rent and refusing to talk with you. You need access to his unit to make repairs, and you need the rent. You want to talk this out with him — but you’re afraid you’ll make things worse if you try. How can you do this?
Or imagine you’ve tried but been unable to collect the rent for three months from your tenant. You need to work out a plan to be repaid or else be able to evict. How can you discuss your rights and your interests in the same conversation without having a fight?
Or imagine a family member suddenly wanting to change their joint ownership arrangement with you. They want to increase their share of the income because they’re working harder than you. Or so they think. You want to discuss it but expect communication will break down — unless you find a new way.
My book The Good Landlord – A Guide to Making a Profit While Making a Difference, offers valuable assistance whether needing to build stronger tenancies or deal with crisis.
The Good Landlord will show how to get results – with your tenants, contractors, co-owners and family members. You’ll learn how to communicate and build relationships that will secure capital to use when cooperation is needed ahead. You’ll learn how to handle tenancy and other issues so they don’t escalate into costly disputes. And if eviction becomes necessary, you’ll learn how to get it done in a cost-effective, sensible way.
Most importantly, this book will help you gain control over your life as a landlord. By making communication work better, you’ll experience greater freedom now and in the future from difficult conflict. You’ll feel more valued as a landlord, and able to use your business as you would like. You’ll have time for yourself, and peace of mind.
